Sounds like the application may be assuming that it's running under a certain 
environment where the missing property exists.  I'm not familiar with wine, but 
it might be that you're running it in some unsupported fashion.  Try and run it 
on another platform or configuration to see if that helps, then use something 
like "xprop -root" to compare properties on the root window.
