I've logged bug 6566332 against this: 6566332 [vermillion] bad text rendering in gnome-terminal
xterm doesn't have this problem so it might have something to do with antialiasing. Possible workaround: Set the system font to monochrome. Some fonts in gnome-terminal also seem better than others.
