You can try editing /usr/share/gdm/custom.conf and set Enable=true in
the [debug] section.  Then restart GDM, and it should echo debug
output to /var/adm/messages.  Look at the bottom of the file for the
gdm-related messages.  Is there any information that might help to
identify why GDM is having trouble starting?

Also, you can check the Xorg logs in /var/log and /var/lib/gdm.
