I also see this same problem with snv_119, so I thought I'd kick the thread.
Initially, gconfd was not running, but starting the daemon from the shell didn't seem to help. I'm seeing this on a Solaris system that I'm ssh'ing into from an Ubuntu desktop using X tunneling.
