Scim (flexible imput method alternative to IIIM) used to show an icon in notification area (system tray), when it was added as 'scim -d' to System Preferences > Startup Applications. But after recent system upgrades (from /dev) it stopped showing up in the system tray with automatic startup. It shows up there only when loaded manually.
