It looks like "start application" was also removed from the standard Gnome menu. Why is that? It's pretty useful in some cases, when one doesn't want to run an application from the shell. For example I run Thunderbird with alltray to dock it into system tray: alltray thunderbird. If this is done from the shell, thuderbird exits when the shell is closed.
