I believe you are seeeing bugster bug #6886835. Stefan Teleman is
working on this, I believe. He provided the following workaround
that you can try

Brian

--- forwarded workaround from Stefan Teleman follows ---

Allright, guys, could you please do me a favor:

I'm attaching a file named "local.conf".

Could you please do the following juju:

1. reinstall SUNWfontconfig-root as it was delivered in snv_124, with no
bug fixes from snv_125.

2. save the attached local.conf in /etc/fonts/local.conf

and then:

%> cd /etc/fonts/conf.d/
%> ln -sf ../conf.avail/10-autohint.conf
%> ln -sf ../conf.avail/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf
%> svcadm disable gdm2-login
%> svcadm disable fc-cache
%> svcadm enable fc-cache
%> svcadm enable gdm2-login

and then login back to GNOME and see if the terminal looks any better.

Could you also set the Terminal Font to DejaVu Sans Mono with subpixel
smoothing (LCD), Full Hinting and RGB order.

The choice of font does make a difference.

Thank you.
