Shawn:

Try renaming /usr/bin/metacity to a different name.  Then startup the
GNOME session, which should start without a window-manager.  Then run
metacity from the command line, and see if it generates any errors.

When metacity auto-launches from gnome-session, you can miss some
useful messages.
