No, you did not expect too much.  NWAM is nice except when it doesn't
work, as you found out the hard way.  It's surprising how many people
give up on the Live CD in disgust because there's no way to "just
enter" the IP info.  You're not alone.

NWAM needs a big red button to turn it off, or better still to pop up
a dialog that asks for IP, mask, and gateway.  I'm sure there's a dozen
RFEs already...
