Alas, I'll be sticking with SXCE for the time being--which means b130 is
what I'll be using for a while...

Sounds promising! But I tried that, to no avail. Specifically, when
su'd to root when logged in as myself I performed the following steps:

# init -s
[...]
# rm /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/GL
# ln -s ../../../../../var/run/opengl/server /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/GL
# ls -Ll /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/GL
total 4639
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 245 Jan 22 09:52 .
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 304 Jan 22 09:52 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 183 Jan 22 09:52 amd64
-rw-r--r-- 1 root bin 2322468 Oct 20 20:51 libglx.so
# init 6

When the system comes back up in multiuser mode, try to change the
Visual Effects still results in a blank white screen. :-(

Do you have any other ideas?
