I've now upgraded to Thunderbird 3.0.1 but I'm still experiencing the same problems??
I think I have identified the error and it looks like when I check username and password authentication within the SMTP config under Edit->Accounts the system responds with an error when it should ask me for a password.... I'm not sure if I need to do something on my Postfix SMTP relay server or if security headers (SMTP_AUTH headers) are getting malformed somewhere?
