Actually, since you broached the subject... The SunView file manager had three very nice features I still miss:
1. It provided an optional wire-diagram view of files and directories that allowed one to edit directory trees by mouse -- and this is the key -- while visually observing across more than one directory level at a time. I know and love the CLI, but for occasional massive multi-level file management tasks, seeing is manipulating. 2. It provided a mechanism to easily place shell script commands in the primary menu structure. Clearly this can be done at deeper levels. But this feature was easily accessible to each user and was done wholly within the file manager itself. No syntax-sensitive coding or X programming was needed, just add the command or shell script. Further, commands could recognize and act on standard file manager targets. 3. Last, the main pane could be split in two or more sub-panes. I never found the documentation for this feature. After invoking it by accidental mouse drag across the border, it was months before I figured out how to do it intentionally. Kind of like a spreadsheet, I still find a split window more intuitive than working on the same directory in two windows, . Following your excellent example, I guess I may go back and try to pull SunView off my QIC-150 1/4 in tapes to revisit!
