Problem solved. Definitely bad downloads. Pulled down new copies of the iso's, burned new CDs, rebooted, and installed.
I am very impressed so far. With a little tweaking and poking around, I have my video running at the right resolution and color depth, I have my wired network connection (which here at work is a static IP) configured and working, pulled down the MacroMedia Flash plugin for Firefox and got it installed and working. Sound is configured and working, as well. Like I said, very impressed. At some point, I am going to try to get the wireless connection in the box also working so that I can connect at home (which is a DHCP-based address) -- that is something that to this point, I have never been able to get a distribution on this box to do: be able to EASILY switch between a wired connection here at work and a wireless connection at home without major futzing on my part (which admittedly may be more of a shortcoming on my part than on the part of any distribution I have played with). Thanks for the quick response on the bad CDs, Ken. One more quick question: I have never used a Conary-based system before, and clearly I need to understand how to use it to install new software, support packages, etc., as well as to keep the already-installed software current. Can anyone recommend a good, concise introduction to Conary that is going to make sense to someone who has been using primarily synaptic on Ubuntu boxes for the past year? As a first shot, I know that the MacroMedia Flash plugin requires two packages (I'm not even sure if that terminology fits anymore) to work completely correctly: ttfonts and urw-fonts. I guess my first shot at using Conary might, then, be to find and install those two items... but clearly I have a learning curve ahead of me with Conary, so any pointers that someone could point me to (even if in an off-list response) would be most welcome!
