Sadly I don't think this is a bug in Ubuntu... Assuming you're using Xorg, the emulator is talking directly to Xorg (via Xrandr) to change the screen resolution. Gnome Shell is not involved at all. It is therefore the job of the emulator to restore the original resolution on exit.

Install atari800-jz package from Ubuntu Software. 2. Run Atari800 emulator 3. Press ALT-F so that Atari800 goes full screen 4. Quit emulator - press F9 (or ALT-F again and make it crash-quit) 4. Desktop is stuck emulator resolution and user is unable to do anything about it. Clicking on battery icon will not display Power Off/Log out option due to small resolution. Only option then is to press CTRL+ALT+DEL and log out this way. [Workarounds] Have a Settings app running with Display tab selected and placed on top left screen corner. Once emulator quits - change resolution manually.
