Unread mail notifications do not update

Bug description:
The Thunderbird icon on the dock shows the count of new mails
correctly, but the icon does not update itself once the emails have
been read. Even restarting the app will not update the icon.
I would expect the notification icon to show zero (new emails) once
the mails have been read.
