Doing it manually gives
tar: dist-upgrade/20120404-1338/apt-term.log: Cannot open: Permission denied
so as I suspected a permissions problem

Still seems to include the file tho

  Navigate to /var/log
  Attempt to compress dist-upgrade folder using right-click 'Compress' 
functionality
  Compression appears to work but gives 'An error occurred when adding files to 
the archive' error message

  This should not appear or should have a 'details' section which
  actually tells what the problem is.
