In this case gnome-nettool is correct and "Network Connections" aka nm- connection-editor is not. Therefore I'm moving this over to network- manager-gnome and will look first for a duplicate. Thanks for your help.
** Package changed: gnome-nettool (Ubuntu) => network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-nettool in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/979015 Title: network adapter not showing in network manager applet Status in “network-manager-applet” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Under the network applets on the toolbar, I see no entry for a wired connection and when I click on connection information, it states "no valid connection found". I can use the "network-tools" application and see I have eth0 and can view my connection information, but again when i go to the configure button, nothing shows up under the wired section. I tried to create an entry and reboot but it still remains and states that it has never been used. I don't have any apparent issues relating to this as far as connectivity is concerned (I'm entering this bug on the same machine) but I wonder if it is effecting other operations such as when I use "sudo update-manager" I sometimes get a failed error message, but not always. Also, prior to me reformatting and reinstalling again last night on this machine which is baremetal: no other operating systems installed, I was running on 12.04 LTS and thought that was the reason for the issue, but I'm currently on a new install of 11.04 and the problem remains. I filed a follow up bug report under question #136802 which I noticed afterwards that it was a bit dated going back to 2010. I then had some additional issues which made me decide to reinstall from scratch and decided to file a new bug report. let me know if there is any additional information I can provide but my lspci output from this machine and another machine (which shows the network just fine) is included in the incident/question above.
