Seems it's gone away with the latest version of Unity. Possible it was
associated with the text glitch on the far left character.

Title:
Outline for selected indicator renders incorrectly when text is
  present

Status in Unity:
  Fix Released
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
When you have text in the indicator button/heading and you click on
it, the left side of the outline to signify that that indicator is
  selected is visually wrong.

  Repro:

  1. Open the messaging menu
  2. Notice there is a 1px or so outline around the icon to signify the menu is
selected/open
  3. Open the User switcher indicator.

  What happens:

  4. Notice the left vertical line is not rendered correctly

  What should happen:

  4. The left vertical should be the same as the right: solid 1px black
  line.

Attached image of my battery menu with the graphical issue
  highlighted.
