Thank you for your bug report, trying with unity 5.10 in precise that doesn't happen, I will assume it got fixed and close the bug, feel free to reopen if you still see it locally though (it could be video driver specific)

Unity should be able to render them better. I've attached a screenshot showing the issue with different sizes and 38px which looks good. It seems to be worst in uneven sizes. This affects both Unity 4.0 and the Unity 5.0 staging ppa.
