Same here, only just changed ubuntu session to gnome classic with gnome- panel. Placed Force Quit on the panel and tried to kill a working app (in my case Firefox), mouse arrow kept moving, other than that, system completely froze, couldn't do anything other than Alt/SysRq REISUB. Ubuntu 12.04

Pressing esc does nothing. I didn't find a way to exit this situation without killing gnome- session from VT and this caused unsaved work to be lost.
