This can be fixed by putting the full path to unity-greeter in the
desktop file, which is owned by the unity-greeter package. Moving over
there. I'll work on it if time permits.

** Package changed: lightdm (Ubuntu) => unity-greeter (Ubuntu)

Title:
lightdm doesn't find unity-greeter when sbin is not in the environment
  PATH

Status in “unity-greeter” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
After upgrading to 11.10 today, the computer didn't start anymore.
After the "ubuntu loading screen" with the dots, the display reverted
to a text screen, ending in some information about "battery status".

After logging in on tty1, I could start gdm as a workaround.

The problem is twofold. First, /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log (and I think
/var/log/lighdm/lightdm.log as well) complained about insufficient privileges
to create /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log. After `chown lightdm
/var/log/lightdm" said file was created (when restarting lightdm) containing
the single line
  exec: 33: unity-greeter: not found

If this happened to a new user, they would be lost!

PS: unity-greeter is installed to /usr/sbin/, but that is not in the
  path apparently)
