For this reason I used wvdial, which worked fine. But the problem is that wvdial does not change the state of the network - network manager applet says that I'm offline (though i am connected through wvdial and I'm actually writing this using it). This leads to software center not allowing to install anything / view product comments, though it does fetch screenshots.
