None were installed in the upgrade, only upgraded with apt-get upgrade. From a 
previous distribution upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 caused this:

but the network was still functional from that, and now after the update from 
two weeks ago, the network stopped working and I still have the waiting for 
network config bug.

  on xubuntu 12.04, after running an upgrade, the network fails to run.
  There is no longer any network icon in the system tray.
