Title:
  [lucid][Compaq WL100 PrismII PC Card] No wireless connection (ESSID
  field scrambled) or kernel panic at boot with network-manager
  installed

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

  The Compaq WL100 wlan PC Card (orinoco driver) does not work with Ubuntu
10.04 Lucid Lynx when the package 'network-manager' is installed. If linux
boots, iwconfig reports a scrambled ESSID field after reboot, similar to this:
  $ iwconfig eth1
  eth1 IEEE 802.11b
ESSID:"f2\x0D\xB71X\xA3Z%]\x05\x17X\xE9^\xD4\xAB\xB2\xCD\xC6\x9B\xB4T\x11\x0E\x82tA!=\xDC\x87"
            Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: None
            Bit Rate:2 Mb/s Sensitivity:1/0
            Retry short limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
            Encryption key:off
            Power Management:off
            Link Quality=52/70 Signal level=-50 dBm Noise level=-147 dBm
            Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
            Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

  Sometimes the boot process halts:
  * Setting sensor limits                                                 [OK]
  Skip stopping firewall: ufw (not enabled)
  [20.296514] Kernel panic - not syncing: stack-protector: Kernel stack is
corrupted in: d6b7820f
  [20.296518]

  The (wired) laptop works fine when the wlan PC Card removed.

  The wireless card works fine when the 'network-manager' package is
  removed from the system. Just removing the dependent package
  'network-manager-gnome' is insufficient to make the card work.

  The problem was discovered and investigated on a Fujitsu Siemens
  AMILO-D series (CY23) laptop (Celeron 1.1GHz) with Lucid freshly
  installed by netboot.  See
  https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/109443 for further
  details in nailing the problen to the 'natwork-manager' package.

  Regards,
  Trond Melen
