K3b apparently closes the DVD even when "start multisession" was selected in the misc tab. Confirmed this by putting the DVD in a different machine and attempting to append with a different program. A little bit disappointing as multisession CD-RW worked OK (what's the difference between multisession on a DVD and a CD-RW?) This in up-to- date Ubuntu 12.04.
