that's because unity is the desktop environment. We should rather look into fixing unity from crashing.

Matching subscriptions: dp-unity https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/806209 Title: Closing unity renders the system unusable Status in Unity: Invalid Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: When unity is closed, either because of a crash or some other reason, all desktop elements are gone, except open windows and the desktop background. The keyboard becomes unusable, and only the mouse still works. Steps to reproduce: 1. Open unity from a terminal. This can be done by executing "unity --replace". 2. When unity has restarted, press Ctrl+C into the terminal to close unity. Unity will now disappear, leaving the system in a state as described above. This happened to me once, because I accidentally closed Unity. None of the regular keyboard shortcuts worked, and I was struggling to get my computer working again. Fortunately, since my mouse still worked, I was able to scroll upwards in the terminal, and, using right-click, copy and paste back in the "unity --replace"-command. This can be a real problem if Unity for some reason crashes, or the user accidentally closes it. While I was able to get it back to normal, I was only lucky to still have the command listed in the terminal, and this certainly not an intuitive solution for a person not familiar with the terminal. As far as I can tell, this can be easily solved by making unity restart automatically if it is closed.
