Same issue here (ubuntu 12.04). Bypassed using ffmpegthumbnailer: 1. sudo apt-get install ffmpegthumbnailer 2. sudo cp /usr/share/thumbnailers/totem.thumbnailer ~/totem.thumbnailer .bak 3. sudo gedit /usr/share/thumbnailers/totem.thumbnailer 4. replace the text with this one:
