After few seconds, screen gives a single flash. At this point X seems to be locked up (e.g. nothing happening on screen, caps-lock doesn't change keyboard indicator, no mouse movement), sometimes for only 20-30 seconds before coming back to normal, sometimes seemingly forever (e.g. gave up waiting after 30 minutes and killed X). Similar happens on opening local file from command line. 'top' shows /usr/bin/X taking 100% CPU. 'strace' of the process shows nothing (i.e. no system calls being made). Chromium-browser doesn't exhibit this behaviour.
