(Compiz won't do it here due to bug #537703, but this will occur in the Unity 2d session or Gnome Shell, for example). Click the All Software toolbar button and listen for the alert sound (or watch for a visual alert). This will be the same alert sound selected in Sound Preferences. This bell sounds every time I click the All Software toolbar button, and it also happens if I get there using other means such as the Back button or filling and then clearing the search field.
