It would boot to a login prompt (cli, not gui) and require a reboot to get the gui login back. My system uses the fglrx driver package from the ubuntu repo. I have a sandy bridge cpu (I7) that has caused issues on previous ubuntu's (11.10 would hard crash and require REISUB to recover). The dedicated (amd card) is set as the default GPU. Not sure what more info needs to be provided. Everything was working before the latest apt-get dist-upgrade.
