I don't know how to troubleshoot this problem myself, so I would gladly provide more information if needed. This problem has presented since the installation of 12.04 (clean install), and has not been fixed by any update. I think this may be a regression since 11.10 did not have this problem. From the symptoms, I would say it is similar to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/767927 (purple bar on top some of the times). When I am successfully able to logout. I've tested going into console and try 'sudo service lightdm stop ', and again 3 out 5 my system freezes. More info: up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04 Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop. Nvidia 310m (proprietary drivers) Thanks in advance for all your help.
