I tried Unity-2d and Unity with the same result. I don't see any errors in the Xorg or lightdm log, but there may well be clues I'm missing. I just pulled in the latest updates with an apt-get dist-upgrade, which seemed to be a dbus security update, and then rebooted. I tried logging in with the most recent old kernel, no improvement. Looked to me like ubuntu-bug was looking for the wrong files in /var/log/lightdm, so I'll drop in the correct ones.
