If this is still ocurring on Ubuntu 12.04 it might be fixed upstream in the 
newly released cairo 1.12.4, as per 
http://www.cairographics.org/news/cairo-1.12.4/ and 
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50852
This new version of cairo will probably soon appear in the xorg-edgers PPA 
available at https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
