A new feature of indicator-messages is that it will hide itself when
there are no apps using the menu. Unfortunately several applications
still need to be ported to the new libmessaging-menu API, including
Pidgin (I do not know about Hotot). This is

Title:
Messaging indicator in tray disappeared after removing Gwibber and
  Empathy

Status in “evolution-indicator” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I've removed Gwibber, Empathy and installed Hotot and Pidgin. After
reboot Ubuntu started without this indicator. Only after Gwibber was
installed again indicator appeared on the proper place.

  I think, it's unexpected behavior.
