Just to point out: if you left "Artist" empty, then Rhythmbox creates a folder
for every artist on the CD. That means that if the disc match fails, the case
explained by the op could happen
There is no clear indication that "Artist" is used as foder name if filled, so
the solution is not obvious. Perhaps a tooltip could ease the confusion a bit.

Title:
Rhythmbox doesn't deal sanely with multiple artist CDs

Status in The Rhythmbox Music Management Application:
  Confirmed
Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

  Hardy, rhythmbox 0.11.5-0ubuntu6

Trying to rip a CD using rhythmbox with multiple artists on will cause
rhythmbox to stick each artist in its own directory. There is no
option to keep the entire CD together.

This makes rhythmbox unsuitable for ripping compilation CDs.
