I noticed this issue affects my system mentioned above under WinXP too. Even more with WinXP.
So I think this whole "bug" is hardware -related. This bug is not to blame Linux. I used WinXP to show animated movies to my kids as video quality is better with WinXP. Videos played without a glitch, but after that my wife surfed the internet using Firefox and XP, and black 1 second blinks appeared at approximately 5 minutes intervals. So, hardware related. So I suspect I have a bad adapter. My computer is a Lenovo ThinkPad x220, to which I've attached a Samsung SyncMaster P2450 monitor, using the DisplayPort digital connection. The monitor periodically goes dark (blank) for a half- second to a second, then comes back on. This does not appear to happen with the laptop screen when I'm using that alone.
