Thunderbird is looking for a URI handler for "GMT+00" in my case.

This affects too many distros to go after each and every one. The root problem is in GNOME2, the fact that GConf doesn't allow the plus sign in key names. Have just checked the Karmic version at: http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/thunderbird which currently shows that version 2 of thunderbird is planned for Karmic release.
