The problem could be reliably induced by almost any manipulation of Firefox, though other interactions also seemed to trigger the problem. Notably, the automatic screen saver appeared to cause a freeze 10 minutes into an initial pkg update, ultimately resulting in a broken install. The resolution was a driver update using ppa:ubuntu-x-swat before attempting any user interaction in X, by logging into the console ASAP with cntl-alt-F1. It seems these updates need to be incorporated into the 12.04 release iso image, and into the normal repository if not already there.
