i too noticed this bug in one of my friend system running Ubuntu 12.04 (amd64). I went to Console mode and killed gnome-screensaver process, switched back to gui mode and got the session as it is. Then i tried with xscreensaver. On locking the screen i was able to see the authentication dialog of xscreensaver and it was flickering continuously with login failure message. Seems it has something to do with pam.
