Your BIOS is broken, because it does not tell us where the different
connectors are connected on the codec chip. Later kernels rely more
heavily on this information.
Here's the recommended way to get the information Raymond (and I) are
asking for. First you need the snd-hda-tools package:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diwic/hda
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install snd-hda-tools
It looks like the Gateway E4300 has a mic and headphone in the front and three
jacks in the back, is this correct?
Plug something into the first jack and execute:
sudo hda-jack-sense-test -a
Notice that one of the lines should say "present = yes". Now unplug the
first jack and plug in the second jack. Execute "sudo hda-jack-sense-
test -a" again, and repeat for all five jacks.
Given the output of hda-jack-sense-test, you should be able to figure
out what pin is connected to which jack. E g, maybe pin 0x0a is front
headphone and 0x0b is rear mic, etc. This is the information we need to
know.
