I did a reinstall of 12.10 and the problem went away.
Of course, the image that I want to be displayed on the screen must still be 
placed directly in the user's ~/Pictures folder.

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 12.10, Gnome Classic with compiz

  When showing login screen, it shows ubuntu default wallpaper, and not
  user wallpaper. My wallpaper is not in ubuntu's list, but from a
  different folder.
