it means the monitor is somehow misbehaving, so the only option is to force the resolution, one way to do that is here:

I even tried two different Nvidia cards, both of which ran very glitchy, and would either lock the system up, or not work at all. When my usb boot disk is ran, it runs it in 1440 x 900 just fine... but when its installed on the drive, the default resolution is the lower one. Still, I like Ubuntu and its done very well for me on the whole. Everything else is working just fine, as far as I can tell. I even installed Netflix and got it to work.
