Sometimes the connection dies and Network Manager can't connect. It tries some other network and ends up asking for the key repeatedly. Instead of just opening one window for the key query it opens plenty of windows with the same query for the key and nm-applet explodes in memory usage. My RAM was full and I think swap had around 3GB used. It took a while for the PC to wake up and until I killed the process everything was superbly slow.
