Title:
lightdm fails to start after upgrade to quantal

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After upgrade to quantal a few days ago the grphical environment fails
to start when the computer boots.

I've tried switching to a VT (which works) and starting lightdm
myself. If I use `sudo lightdm` and redirect the output to a file this
works. If I use `sudo service lightdm start` this fails.

The system will boot up fine if I edit the grub command line and
  remove $vt_handoff from the end
