I had the latest supported version of xserver-xorg-video-intel for Precise which is 2:2.17. Tried ppa:xorg-swat first which installed 2:2.19. That didn't help. Then tried xorg-edgers which installed 2:2.21.5+.... That seems to have worked. Has not seen the issue again till now. Thanks for your help. Wondering whether I should stay on with xorg-edgers or should purge it some time.
