wow. this is obviously a problem for a number of people, so it is
disappointing that the ubuntu developer reaction is to discount and
invalidate this bug. we are all trying to help make ubuntu better, why
be dismissive about that?

since the graphics is crashing, it is extremely difficult to capture
dmesg or the i915_error_state. but i did get lucky and managed to get in
a virtual terminal after about 20 minutes of rebooting and trying.
attached please find the three requested attachments (next two in next
posts--how do you add multiple attachments?).

** Attachment added: "dmesg"

Title:
  xserver-xorg-video-intel causes xserver to crash

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Updated system to 3.2.0-39-generic-pae #62-Ubuntu SMP.
  Rebooted and logged into KDE.
After a variable amount of time usually 1 to 5 minutes the screen would
freeze although most times I could still move the mouse pointer. Had to hard
reset to get the system up again.

Did 'sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel'. Restarted system
and was able to login and use kde okay with no problems. I assume that
the video driver now being used is VESA?

Reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel. Rebooted and then logged into
KDE. Problem with screen freezing returned.
