I made our system as it is so as to make it possible to have multiple
drivers installed in parellel and to be able to easily switch between
them.

Title:
libs unique to nvidia should be linked to /usr/lib

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
nvidia-current contains libGL.so which is found (if a nvidia card is
used for accelerated graphics) by setting /etc/alternatives/x86_64
  -linux-gnu_gl_conf.

nvidia-current however contains other libraries, which are useful also
if an nvidia card is not used for OpenGL, such as libnvidia-
compiler.so for OpenCL or libcuda.so for CUDA. In such a case, the
whole /usr/lib/nvidia-current directory must NOT be added to
ld.so.conf.d or LD_LIBRARY_PATH, since it also contains nvidia's
libGL.so, which could override (come first before) libGL.so's
  installed by other drivers.

A workaround is to link manually individual libs from /usr/lib/nvidia-
current into /usr/(local/)lib so that they are found, while not
  exposing the libGL.so.

A proper solution would be to create symlinks for libs not carrying a
  generic name (e.g. libcuda.so, libnvidia-compiler.so, but NOT
libOpenCL.so, libGL.so, which are also provided by other packages) in
directories searched by ld.so by default, e.g. /usr/lib.
