Hi Brian -

Thanks for your suggestion. That step was taken before reporting the
bug. Since reporting the bug there have been several Ubuntu updates
through software center. LO Calc continued to behave the same.

However I did not reinitialize the configuration since the updates. Per
your instruction I did.

Then I launched Calc by double clicking a file
- window frame appeared
- window frame and area inside frame went gray
- spreadsheet appeared (elapsed time 54 sec)

Checked contents of sub-menus. File | New, File | Recent Documents, File
| Wizards, File | Send and File | Templates all have their child
entries.

Sub-menus of every other main menu item were stubs with no entries
displayed. e.g. Edit | Changes, Edit | Fill, and on to Data | Pivot
Table are all empty menu stubs.

Please note (I'll run ubuntu-bug if you wish) this also occurs with
Writer. I haven't noticed it in Base (which I use infrequently) and
haven't opened Impress or Draw in ages so have no idea if they are
affected.

Also note, as you might imagine, this is a frustrating bug. Makes first
use of Calc/Writer very agonizing. So I relented recently and installed
AOO from Apache_OpenOffice_incubating_3.4.1_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-
US.tar.gz. I am not experiencing this problem with AOO.

And last note, I have a spreadsheet, 16.1 Kbs, with 19 pages and
contianing about 300 cells with conditional formating. It was taking
about a minute to open / save in LO even after "pre opening" LO to make
sure complete menus would appear. As of now the spreadsheet no longer
opens in LO and an Ubuntu error report is generated on first attempt to
open. It opens in about 5 seconds with AOO.

Let me know any additional trouble shooting / bug collecting steps you
need.

Title:
calc freezes when beginning to edit new or existing spreadsheet

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  start computer

  launch calc
  - begin editing new spreadsheet and calc freezes (occurs on first event, e.g.
click in cell, type first letter/number), calc window goes grey for upwards of
30 seconds, then unfreezes and normal editing resumes
  - opening additional spreadsheets or creating other new spreadsheets does not
encounter freeze but these actions can only be performed once initial freeze
has passed

  - or -

launch calc by double-clicking a spreadsheet
  - begin editing and spreadsheet freezes (again first event as described above)
  - often sub-menus are empty after freeze is over, e.g. Insert/Names,
Insert/Picture, Data/Filter and etc display submenu stub with no entries. Must
close and restart calc to cause submenus to be repopulated
