I experience the same issue. I've tested this a bit, and this only
happens (to me at least) with Intel Haswell and Iris. I know that
almost an identical situation (hangs slightly more frequently) was
encountered with SandyBridge, and a patch to X was issued then, and
there was a patch for X when IvyBridge came out that also fixed GPU
hangs. Wheter or not this is helpful, I hope this gets resolved quickly,
as it does unfortunately make the device a pain in the ass to use.

Title:
frequency of gpu hangs increased dramatically over the weekend

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I am somewhat used to having GPU lockups hang X for me maybe once a
week. I've followed a few vague bugs on the problem, but over the
past weekend this has grown to every couple of hours.

Easy ways to trigger it: changing workspaces too quickly while there
is disk activity, or letting the screensaver go into power saving mode
on the screen. The last one requires a hard reboot and I end up with
the screen in a very dim state after the boot.

Have a kern.log, if it helps.
