This is a very old bug and it's certainly not a case anymore with unity-

Bug description:
  Using Maverick.

I see an icon for, say, inkscape, in the "Applications" menu.

  I apt-get remove inkscape. I re-open the Applications page, and I
still see the inkscape icon, which is still clickable.

I can click it, and the Applications menu goes away, making me think
that it's trying to launch something, but of course, the app doesn't
  launch (since it's been removed).
